In Champagne, Jelly Beans and Chocolate, Author R.L. Taylor tells the engrossing story of Royce Tyler, a talented man broken by soul wrenching circumstances that left him deeply depressed and ultimately homeless. Ultimately, Royce pulls his life together and seeks redemption not only for himself but for all people who, fallen on hard times, find themselves abused and mistreated due to their homeless status. Taylor is a great story teller. Your allegiance will sway to Royce as he attempts to resurrect his life while Paula’s materialistic and opportunistic ways make her less than appealing. But then Taylor tips the scales as Paula becomes a stronger woman of substance no longer allowing others and their offerings to influence her desires.

In the end, Michael and his uncle’s selfishness and greed seal their fates, while Royce rises to the cause and claims success both personally and professionally with Paula by his side. Paula gains all the wealth she could ever dream of because coupled with financial security, Royce offers her unflinching love.

Taylor touches on many topics, including greed, homelessness, loyalty and depression. While there were altercations, dialogue and deceptions that tried my patience as a reader, I quickly realized how the main characters improved for the better and that in this story just as in life, we don’t always do or say the right thing.

Taylor proves that a great love story can be enjoyed without all the overdone sexual content often found in today’s love stories. For an engaging story that delivered sweet love and devotion, Champagne, Jelly Beans and Chocolate earns 4 out of 5 Sable Seals.

CHAPTER 1

11:30 a.m. - Friday, August 15th

Andre’s head practically hung half way out the car window. He resembled a pet Labrador retriever as his wife of eight years drove along the mountain side.

“I can’t believe I’m doing this. How did I let you talk me into this mess? You’re crazy, you know that?” Andre slapped the glove box. “You need to calm down. I know that much,” Dionne said. Her eyes narrowed down to slits as she focused on the narrow winding road. She’d had enough of his complaining for one day.

The white Ford Escape whizzed past a sign that read: “Welcome to Grandridge, home of the Red Tornadoes.” The quaint town sat nestled in what’s called the foothills of the Smoky Mountain range, which cast its considerable shadow over the small college based community. The mountain filled spectacular views in the distance were a far cry from city noise and endless blocks of concrete they were familiar with.

North State University would never be mentioned in the same breath as Notre Dame, Michigan, or Duke, but still, a major university.

The professors at the school were paid well. Very well.

“I’m serious DeDe. I should have put my foot down. Give me one good reason to move here,” Andre said. His nostrils flared.

“For starters, you don’t even have a job. You keep up all that yelling and we gonna have some problems,” Dionne pointed at him. “Problems? Like what? Are you threatening me again? Don’t let that little professor title go to your head.”

“I’m not going to tell you again. Lower your voice. I’m not trying to argue with you on our first day here.”

“I’m not trying to argue either…I’m just saying.”

“Saying nothing, as always. You’re always talking. Why don’t you actually do something for once?”

“Whatever.” He folded his arms.

“Anyway Andre. I’m not letting you drag me down.”

Andre sulked in his seat. But inside he cringed. They would be living in a strange town, far away from home, in a house that dwarfed their former two bedroom brownstone apartment. It wasn’t the thought of a mortgage that scared Andre. It was the size of the mortgage.

The summertime heat offered little relief in the form of a breeze as they crept along through the sleepy town which seemed deserted with the students gone for summer.

“Look, there’s the campus where I’ll be teaching. Can you believe it? I’m a real professor,” Dionne said, pointing to her left.

“What’s that smell?” Andre wrinkled his nose and sniffed into the wind several times, ignoring her enthusiasm.

“It’s called fresh air. For real. I’m sick of your mouth. Nobody twisted your arm into moving here. You could’ve stayed in New York.” She sucked her teeth.

“It’s like that now?” Andre lifted an eyebrow.

“What do you expect me to say? I’m looking for a little support. I’m nervous about the move too. I’m looking at the positives.”

Andre closed his eyes and reclined in his seat.

No amount of negativity he dispersed would totally thwart Dionne’s state of bliss. If he was unable to partake in the delight and warmth she possessed for the relocation, too bad.

Ever since Dionne accepted to take the position to teach at North State all Andre heard about was how wonderful a place it was. Grandridge made the list as one of the top 100 places to live in America
by a recent online poll.

She’d shown him every website imaginable about this quiet college town. Charming. Rustic. Majestic. Pleasant. Those were the words used to describe this hidden gem of a community.

He used his own set of words. Boring. Expensive. Overrated.

April 23rd

Who wants to deal with the hassles involved in a cross country move? How about undergoing the experience twice in one year? There exist some people in the world that would move anywhere to advance their career. Certainly any sane person would move twice in a year if it could possibly save their marriage. Anyone would definitely undertake such a move if they knew it could save their life…

Dionne Harper would handle that laborious task. As a matter of fact, she had to. She stood in the center of her kitchen and dropped a bomb on her husband. She’d received another job offer. A job offer more lucrative and prestigious than she ever imagined. One that couldn’t have come at a better time.

She told her husband the news and braced herself. She held her breath and anticipated a soured response. He would explode once he heard the news. She didn’t care. He sought a retreat to the east coast. But he couldn’t find a job fast enough. That left them with not much of a choice. Each day became more of a gamble. More pressured, more stressful, and potentially dangerous. He’d have an opinion, yes. But no choice.
“Michigan? Are you serious? Michigan? I never even heard of this place. Where’s Lansing?” Andre asked.

“It’s East Lansing,” Dionne said. She hoped his recently found supportive attitude continued as it had over the past six months.

It wasn’t his first choice in location, but better judgment convinced him that any news of an escape was a blessing.

War-torn Kosovo would be superior to Grandridge.

Andre sighed and reached out for her hand.

“I start next month. I signed on to teach summer classes in Trigonometry. I wanted to get my feet wet before the fall semester starts,” Dionne said while their fingertips made contact.

“So you’re saying we have to be there-”

“In about two weeks,” Dionne said as she placed her head against his shoulder. A hushed exhale escaped from inside of her.

“Two weeks?” Andre asked. That meant a hastened exit.

“I figured the sooner, the better…,” Dionne said.

“You’re right,” Andre whispered, “we’ve been through enough.” His tone softened even more as he rubbed her back.

“I’m going to go upstairs and keep packing,” she said.

Within seconds Dionne disappeared upstairs. Andre exited the kitchen after maneuvering past several dozen cardboard boxes, which littered the kitchen and hallway. He approached the garage and entered.

He stepped towards the black and white dart board that hung on the wall and plucked out a few darts. He took a few paces backwards and began to hurl the darts towards the wall. His stress subsided.

Moving again. This would be the second move inside of a year. Crazy. Just crazy. No other word could describe their life. Their marriage had been tested unmercifully and yet they survived the first horrendous move. Together, they could handle another. Once out of darts he opened the garage door.

The southern sunlight stretched inside the two car garage. He paced outside and shoved his hands deep into his pockets. His eyes never left the real estate sign in the front lawn. They’d just accepted an offer on their historic two-story home. A closing date was set. Eight more days and they’d be out of there. Good riddance.

He’d seen first hand how so-called quaint communities operated. You either get along with the right people or you could be blackballed, marked, and ostracized. If you didn’t assimilate the results could be deadly. Yes, deadly.

It's been too long...

Hello all,

It's been way too long since I've posted. My apologies to those who noticed. To those that didn't. Shame on you...and me. I have been away tending to what we call the necessities of life. Job, family, responsibilities sometimes can slow us all down on our life journey. I've experienced many changes (all for the better) and now I've returned, ready to share once again. I hope you will join me on this journey as I strive to share my thoughts and my writing with you. With all the news about a certain golfer and a certain situation, one issue has fallen from the forefront in the media coverage. The gossip columns and mainstream anchors have moved on to the more sizzling details. Long forgotten is the cause of the whole golfer turned bad guy scandal. Text messaging. Text messaging and cell phones started this whole mess for the billion dollar athlete. Text messaging has also managed to embarass other public figures as well. Once you hit send the recipient has the power. They can keep your message saved and use it for blackmail or profit, such as the recent case. People need to think before sending messages...better yet, use better all around judgment. First of all, you have no business sending inapropriate messages to anyone other than your spouse.

Busy, Busy, Busy

We all lead full lives. When you are very busy it is hard to imagine time for yourself, let alone planning and prioritizing that time. If you do create time to be alone...congratulations! (You're one of the few)

If you don’t, consider this: when you are not taking time out for yourself, you risk living a life that is disconnected from who you are. I'm willing to guess that it's difficult to remember what you did last Tuesday.

By taking time out just for you, to quiet your mind and have peace, you are able to reconnect your head with your heart. When you are disconnected you might find yourself anxious, indecisive and making decisions that please others rather than decisions that serve to create a better life for you. Take a little time to enjoy the simple things; perhaps a glass of wine or a good book (hint, hint)

It doesn’t have to be fancy or elaborate. All you have to do is simply schedule at least 15 minutes everyday for yourself. Choose a comfortable, quiet place—it can be anywhere, in a park, in your room. Take a deep breath, quiet your mind and settle down.

As you make this a daily practice or as often as you can you will begin to notice that you feel more grounded, relaxed and more content with your life.

How often do you feel run by your schedule?

Kyus Philnesta – Writer, Author & Poet

Bio - Kyus was born and raised in Miami, FL. She now resides in Pembroke Pines with her husband, Broderick, their 4 yr old son and their 15 yr old nephew. Kyus received her Associate Degree in General Studies from Miami Dade Community College. She continued her education at Florida International University where she earned her Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice. She has been working in the criminal justice field for the past 24 yrs.

Kyus selfpublished her first book, To the Heart of Things, A Chapbook of Poetry in 2001. Her depute novel, Because of Love was derived from one of her poems in that book.

What do you want readers to take away from your book?
There are two things I want to bring to light in my books. First I want to focus on issues that changes my protagonist life. I don't want to just write love stories, (although Because of Love is a love story) or write about the drama that goes on in relationships. I want to take issues like rape, death, teenage pregnancy or serious illnesses like cancer and place these issues in their lives. I want to show strong, solid relationships (marriages, friendships, families, couples) being shattered by uncontrollable events and then show how these issues is dealt with.
The second thing I want from my readers is to awaken their moral consciousness. When they find themselves facing a crisis beyond their control and must make a moral decision, do they allow what they have been taught to shape their decision, even if their heart is wrapped up in pain? Or do they allow the pain or anger or hatred or what ever the emotion is, to be the guiding factor on how the crisis is handled.

Are you a believer in outlines or do you write spontaneously?
RL, I do a little of both. In Because of Love I wrote an outline. I needed a way to keep track of time, people ages, events, etc. (besides, it was my first book). But eventually the book just took off. Instead of me taking my characters on a journey, they took me. I just penned the words.

But for the two books I’m writing now (one is a sequel to Because of Love) my outline is in my head. I haven’t written anything down. I just know where I want to go and how I want to get there. Who knows, maybe my characters will take me on another journey.

What do you think it is about your book that will keep readers turning the pages?
To answer this question, I cheated. It would be so easy for me to tell you, ‘Oh, my novel is this’ or ‘my novel is that’. ‘It’s filled with this and it’ll make you that.’ But what I did was looked back at some of my reader’s reviews. What was it that kept them turning the pages? Here’s what some of them had to say:

“The story kept my attention and I wanted to read more. I really got into the characters and had personal emotions about each. It took me away as I wanted it to. I don’t usually read a book in 2 days, but it was hard to put down because I became personally involved with the characters and wanted to see where life took them. I received your book from a co-worker to read. I started reading it on a Tues I was done by Thurs when I say your book was so wonderful to read words just can't explain. I finally read your book and what a wonderful book it was!!!!! If I could give you an award for your writing (book), I would because I thought it was just that good/great. I think it was well written and could be compared to such writers as Kimberla Lawson Roby and Carl Webber. I enjoyed how easy it was to read, the twists it offered and oh, the illusions. I think it leaves room to a sequel into the lives of Lena and Kyle getting married and their lives thereafter, etc. I like the strong family support that both Kyle and Tony had as well as their true, tried and tested friendship. Oh, and you really did your homework when it came to your research. You provided clear information of symptoms, treatment and it's effects. Oh and the medical terminology and name of medicine was right on target. There were sooo many good parts about the book.

Keep Your Head Up

Sometimes the person we show to our mate is a mask. The mask says that we are confident. But behind the mask, tells the real story....
Many people have low self esteem and fear rejection.
You can only attract to you what you believe about yourself.
In other words, most times, you will get what you think you deserve. Only you know how you feel about yourself. So often, we want to be swept off our feet as we see on the movie screen or in a book. The term, "soul mate". Is that even possible, or realistic?
Soul Mate is defined as a strong magnetic ffinity to another person.It's easy to become attracted to the wrong person for what we need to fill in ourselves.Sometimes people falsely fill this hole looking outside of themselves. It doesn't work.Today, be courageous and look at your self esteem.

The Last Ms. Understanding is a book that anyone can relate to. One cannot help but become engrossed in the story line from beginning to end. The book never becomes stagnant and will keep your interest throughout. The author does a great job of showing both sides of the story, but still keeping you guessing and wondering at what might happen next. Hold onto your seat as Rita and Lee ride one emotional rollercoaster ride after another...see what happens as two people try and keep secrets while sinking further and further into their web of deceit. Not only will you not be dissapointed, but you'll find yourself anxiously wanting more...yes, I see a sequel coming and can only hope that the author does as well...

Post Traumatic Stress + Relationships

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a recurrent emotional reaction to a terrifying, uncontrollable or life-threatening event. It is a real illness and treatment can help. The onset of anxiety and other post traumatic stress disorders is directly linked to any terrifying and violent event that threatens the life of an individual or the family. It doesn't necessarily mean the individual was directly threatened.This disorder is a very common problem that affects individuals after going through a horrifying experience.

In my new novel Champagne, Jellybeans, and Chocolate the main character Royce Tyler suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He has recently suffered a major tragedy and loss in his life. This has sent him spiraling out of control and homeless. At this low point in life he is reaquainted with his college girlfriend Paula Daniels. He is very interested in reconnecting with her. Should he tell her the truth about his mental state? Is it any of her business? What would you do?

Read on to learn a little more about what PTSD is and what Royce is facing?

Maybe you or someone you know has battled this illness as well...

Symptoms of PTSD such as profound shock, anxiety and despair are often manifested in victims. Also common are avoidance, anxiety, nightmares, irritability and detachment. Symptoms of PTSD include flashbacks of the traumatic event, nightmares of the traumatic event, emotional numbness, poor sleeping patterns depression and/or irritability or outbursts of anger. After the terrifying ordeal, the person who develops post traumatic stress disorder or a related symptom will become emotionally numb, lose interest in things they previously enjoyed, become irritable, more aggressive, startle easily or perhaps become violent.

Depression is a common product of this inability to resolve painful feelings. Disassociation, or other mental health problems can develop as a result of this terrifying experience. Alcohol or other substance abuse, or other anxiety disorders frequently co-occur with PTSD.

It is imperative this help be obtained quickly through contacting your family doctor, hospitals, private clinics, local psychiatric societies, mental health specialists such as psychologists and social workers or your local victims of crime association. The police and social service agencies will be able to provide you with this contact information if you cannot locate it in your phone book.

My debut novel The Last Ms. Understanding was selected as their October Book of the Month

-Tell us how you got started into writing ?

A: I used to be a habitual reader up until about 7 or 8 years ago. Life got busy and my reading slowed down.

Then, a friend of mine told me he was writing a book and suggested I give it a try. That prompted the reading bug again, and the next thing I know I was writing. I also studied the craft very hard, submerging myself in articles, books, and magazines surrounding the subject of writing. For the past 3 years I have been writing almost daily, and I don’t see an end in sight.

-How did you come up with the title for your book and what was the mindset behind it?

A: The Last Ms. Understanding was my debut novel. The title is a play on words and basically means that sometimes in relationships understanding is needed. In this book the main female character is very understanding, but sometimes misunderstandings can be used as an excuse to hide the truth.

-Tell us about any current projects you're working on...

A: I am currently working on promoting my new novel; Champagne , Jellybeans, and Chocolate. I also have two other books completed and I’m having trouble figuring out which one to focus my attention on as I embark on the final edits for each. -What advice would you give other writers trying to write their first novel?

A: I would say to not give up, keep writing, and educate yourself as much as possible. Self-publishing can be difficult, especially when you’re trying to gain an audience and respect as a quality author. Don’t doubt your ability, you just may be talented.

-As a male, did you find it difficult to put a woman's voice to your book?

A: I thought about various women I know or have known. Being married to an independent professional woman was a blessing because I know how strong women can be. In each book I hope to portray women in a positive light. I see too many books today with women sleeping around and being promiscuous. I feel that is a bad representation of our women.

-How did you come up with the story line for your book?

A: The storyline evolved as I wrote it. I tried to stick to an outline but added extra twists and turns inside every chapter. I really wanted to keep the reader guessing as they read on. I put myself in each characters shoe’s to ask myself how I would react in their situation.

-Is there anything different or any changes you wish you had made regarding the story and/or characters looking back?

A: I kind of like how it ended up. The reason I say this is because I receive so many varying views on who was right, and who was wrong. Some female readers really were pulling for Rita. Others couldn’t stand her. The same is true with Lee. Most readers said he was the “typical man”, and I’m not sure if that was a compliment or not. You and others have hinted at a sequel, so I feel like I delivered. A sequel may be in the works soon…

-Which character do you find your readers tend to identify with the most?

A: I would say half and half. The women say either Rita or Simone. All men say Lee. I patterned a lot of his behavior after myself and decisions I’ve made. Good or bad. There is definitely a wide range of characters in the book. Everyone will be able to identify with one of them.

-What are some of your favorite books?

A: I have to say that I’m all over the map as far as reading. I will mix in some non-fiction at times, but fiction novels…. I really enjoyed, John Grisham “The Street Lawyer”, Brandon Massey “Cornered”, and Stuart Woods “Short Straw"

-Anything else you would like to tell us about RL?

A: I want readers to know that I am going to turn out books that are truly different. I will make sure to present women in a positive light and not degrade. At the same time I assure you that you will be thoroughly entertained. My goal is to not have any dull chapters. I want readers to love my books as much as I enjoy crafting the stories.

Has "street-lit" been a blessing or a curse?
Should African-American books be lumped together in one section?
What kinds of books do you enjoy reading?

Last month I happened to go into the Borders Books store at the Stonecrest mall in Lithonia, Ga., about a half-hour from my house here. To my surprise, it had one of the largest collections of books by black authors that I've ever seen outside an independent black bookstore, rows and rows of bookcases. This is the sort of discovery that makes the pulse quicken, evidence of a population I've spent most of my professional life seeking: African-American readers. What a thrill to have so much space in a major chain store devoted to this country's black writers.

With an extra spring in my step, I walked into the "African-American Literature" section - and what I saw there thoroughly embarrassed and disgusted me.

On shelf after shelf, in bookcase after bookcase, all that I could see was lurid book jackets displaying all forms of brown flesh, usually half-naked and in some erotic pose, often accompanied by guns and other symbols of criminal life. I felt as if I was walking into a pornography shop, except in this case the smut is being produced by and for my people, and it is called "literature."

As a black author, I had certainly become familiar with the sexualization and degradation of black fiction. Over the last several years, I had watched the shelves of black bookstores around the country and the tables of street vendors, particularly in New York City, become overrun with novels that seemed to appeal exclusively to our most prurient natures - as if these nasty books were pairing off back in the stockrooms like little paperback rabbits and churning out even more graphic offspring that make Ralph Ellison books cringe into a dusty corner.

Early last year I walked into a B. Dalton bookstore in a New Jersey mall where the manager had always proudly told me how well my books were selling. This time, I was introduced to a new manager who was just as proud to show me an enhanced black books section teeming with this new black erotica. I've also noticed much more of this oversexed genre in Barnes & Noble bookstores over the past few months, although it's harder to see there since the chain doesn't appear to have separate black fiction sections.

But up until that visit to Borders in Lithonia, I had thought this mostly a phenomenon of the black retail world, where the black bookstore owners and street vendors say they have to stock what sells, and increasingly what sells are stories that glorify and glamorize black criminals. The genre has been described by different names; "ghetto fiction" and "street lit" are two I've heard most often. Apparently, what we are now seeing is the crossover of this genre to mainstream bookstores.

But the placard above this section of Borders in Lithonia didn't say "Street Lit," it said "African-American Literature." We were all represented under that placard, the whole community of black authors - from me to Terry McMillan and Toni Morrison, from Yolanda Joe and Benilde Little to Edward P. Jones and Kuwana Haulsey - surrounded and swallowed whole on the shelves by an overwhelming wave of titles and jackets that I wouldn't want my 13-year-old son to see: "Hustlin' Backwards." "Legit Baller." "A Hustler's Wife." "Chocolate Flava."

I've heard defenders say that the main buyers of these books, young black women, have simply found something that speaks to them, and that it's great that they're reading something. I'd agree if these books were a starting point, and that readers ultimately turned to works inspired by the best that's in us, not the worst.

But we're not seeing evidence of that. On Essence magazine's list of best sellers at black bookstores, for example, authors of street lit now dominate, driving out serious writers. Under the heading "African-American Literature," what's available is almost exclusively pornography for black women.

As I stood there in Borders, I had two sensations: I was ashamed and mortified to see my books sitting on the same shelves as these titles; and secondly, as someone who makes a living as a writer I felt I had no way to compete with these purveyors of crassness.

That leaves me wondering where we - writers, publishers, readers, the black community - go from here. Is street fiction some passing fad, or does it represent our future? It's depressing that this noble profession, one that I aspired to as a child from the moment I first cracked open James Baldwin and Gabriel García Márquez about 30 years ago, has been reduced by the greed of the publishing industry and the ways of the American marketplace to a tasteless collection of pornography.

I realize that publishing is a business, but publishers also have a responsibility to balance street lit with more quality writing. After all, how are we going to explain ourselves to the next generation of writers and readers who will wonder why they have so little to read of import and value produced in the early 21st century, why their founts of inspiration are so parched?

At times, I push myself away from the computer in anger. I don't want to compete with "Legit Baller." But then I come across something like "The Known World" by Edward P. Jones and again I am inspired.

But I must say that I retain very little of the hope and excitement and enthusiasm that I had when my first book was published eight years ago. I feel defeated, disrespected and troubled about the future of my community and my little subsection of this carnivorous, unforgiving industry.

Hello,

My name is Royce Tyler and I've been dealing with a lot of emotional stress lately and I'm looking to pull myself out of this saddened state. For the past few months I've been walking around trying to conceal this secret that I've been living with. It's bugging me because I feel like there isn't anyone out there who understands my situation.

I don't know who to turn to..who I can talk to? I'm really afraid that people will laugh at me, or look down on me. Believe me I'm trying to make it...it's hard. I'm not here to ask for money or even your sympathy. Really, a little understanding would be nice. Please, don't treat me like I have some kind of death-dealing contagious disease. I'm just looking for a listening ear. There's more people out here like me than you may even realize. I look just like you. Trust me, you couldn't pick me out of a crowd. I'm educated and well-spoken but that didn't stop me from ending up in this predicament.

I'm ashamed it's come to this point. I promise myself everyday that things are going to turn around. Things are going to change. I ran into an old girlfriend from college this morning. She had it going on. She looked absolutely amazing and had a a great job. I couldn't force myself to tell her the truth. When she asked me how I'd been doing I just lied and told her I was fine. In reality I'm not. I'm battling depression. There's more...I have to be honest. I have to tell someone. I'm homeless. There I said it....homeless.

How do you react to homeless people? Have you or anyone you know ever been forced to live on the street? How close do you think the average person is to ending up homeless?

A Few Homeless Facts and Statistics:

Nationwide, 44 percent of homeless people have some sort of jobs, according to the latest statistics available from U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Of the adults who requested emergency food aid in 26 major American cities this year, 67 percent were employed, according to a report released recently by the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
That's almost double the 37 percent found last year in the 30 cities surveyed by the mayors' conference; but no one at the organization can explain the increase.

In 2006 52% of homeless adults and 54% of homeless youth 17 and younger report a recent diagnosis or treatment for a serious mental illness. In addition, 33% of adults and 24% of youth report cognitive disabilities that make them frequently confused or cause problems in making decisions.

Why can't relationships be easy?

This is a fair question. There are many answers.

How do you feel? Below are 5 issues couples face today...

Issue #1: The Breadwinner-

Up until recently the male has been the provider of the typical American family. He won the bread and he brought home the goods. When the opportunity for marriage came along, it wasn't always an entirely attractive opportunity. It was a leap of faith to marry because it seemed he had a lot of freedom to lose. For a woman however, marriage was an opportunity to gain freedom. Freedom from the burden of providing for herself and the opportunity to try her hand at something she had never done before----have children. It's no wonder that women want marriage and men think twice.

Issue #2: The Breadwinner Catch-22-

Today, women value work, success and education, sometimes to the extent that they no longer seek the opportunities of family life. Many women today earn more than their man. What is he supposed to do? He can provide more than money for the family but his role has become cheapened---almost unnecessary. The woman takes a physical role (breadwinner) and a spiritual role (mother) and leaves very little for the man. What is his role? It's no wonder a man shirks from his “responsibilities.” What are his responsibilities?

Issue #3: Men Love their Playtime-
Men seem to value play and want freedom. However, most men are well aware that marriage isn't always about play. In fact, most of the time it's not about play. Women who value friendship and companionship sometimes think,commitment and children will force them to prioritize their values as they would prefer not to. It's reasonable to see why the male counterpart sometimes shies away from the serious relationship that is presented to him.

Issue #4: Fear of Failure-

Also with the fear of investing in a serious relationship is the fear of failure, and nothing offers as much potential for failure as marriage. It's been said that love is a gamble. It’s cruel. It’s dangerous. Commitment, can be even more of a minefield. No wonder that when love rears its head, many men hesitate – or turn and run.Serious Relationship Phobia

Issue #5: Lack of Options-

Believe it or not, a woman living in the U.S. Today will have far more options than the male counterpart who shares her same economic status. She can decide she wants children, that she wants to work, that she wants to go back to school, that she wants to change her career, that she wants it all.

All of that said; a serious relationship, when done with respect, and very careful consideration can actually be quite pleasant for both sexes...

Getting back together with your ex....

Getting back together after a long time can seem like a tricky proposition. If you are committed to making this relationship work there are a few things to keep in mind so that you can avoid the potential pitfalls that had you parting ways in the past. It’s a good idea to keep these things in mind as you explore a new relationship whether you've been apart for months or years.

Getting back together after a long time is not that uncommon. Couples are now finding one another and reconnection after years thanks to the power of the Internet and many programs that allow you to touch base with high school and college connections. A few thoughts…Don't work so hard at rekindling an old flame. That flame died for a reason. Make a point of building a new relationship based on the people you are today rather than the person you knew so long ago.
Strong bonds of love stand the test of time. If you really loved each other at one time the chances are that the love you felt didn't go away. It's still there you just might need to work a little bit to rekindle things. Chances are you buried it deep once the relationship ended - whatever the reason for the initial breakup may have been. People change. Hopefully for the better. Take the time to get to know the new person behind the familiar face. Getting to know the new person while remembering the things you loved about at the heart of your former sweetheart will assist you in not focusing on the new expectations and staying more focused on hope for the future. Look forward and not behind.

It is found to be difficult when getting back together after a long break to keep your eyes to the future. There is a past there but that past should stay buried. It’s the past. Don’t bring arguments from the old relationship up and make sure you work hard to live your relationship in the here and now rather than attempting to relive the relationship that ended so long ago. Talk, hold hands, and reminisce. Keep your eyes to the future rather than looking back at the relationships past.

Hot men, feisty women, and hopefully places you can believe you’re there. I love adding little twists, my characters have quirks…ok, sometimes many of them but I think it makes them more “relatable” if that makes sense.

My novel is real. It relates to people we know, if not ourselves. One can substitute the names of my fictitious characters with those they have personal encounters with. A believable story makes the best journey for reading.

Are you a believer in outlines, or do you write spontaneously?

I do not outline the way some authors do. Because I'm writing a series, the world my characters live in is already created, many of the characters are ongoing, though different ones may have starring roles depending upon the book. In No Sanctuary the romance between Detective Doug Milligan and Officer Stacey Wilbur doesn't have much of a chance to develop as they investigate the murder of a popular minister's wife.

What I do when starting a new series book is decide what kind of crime I want the characters to face and what new characters need to be created--and because the Rocky Bluff P.D. is always a centerpiece, there will be more than one problem to be faced both on the job and in their personal lives.

What do you think it is about your book that will keep readers turning the pages?
My intention was to create enough suspense to entice the reader to want to find out how the mystery will be resolved and what will happen in the characters lives.

Although love can be shown and felt simultaneously, it should never be felt and not sown. Also, I challenge readers to define, know, and seek relationships that are positive, healthy and whole.

Are you a believer in outlines, or do you write spontaneously?
Depending on what I am writing determines whether or not I use an outline. The use of an outline is usually dictated by the length of what I am writing. When I am writing a book or something that covers a variety of subjects an outline works better. In fact, an outline makes it easier for me to write lengthy stories. I am able to skip around specific headers as needed without extra editing.

What do you think it is about your book that will keep readers turning the pages?
I believe the story compels readers to keep turning pages is Rhythm Can’t Keep Time deals with true to life characters and situations. Readers of both sexes are able to find at least one character and/or situation that he or she can relate to.

I want readers to be transported to a different place and time. I want them to be emotionally invested in the characters. I want readers to care what happens. Crown's Jewel does just that.

Crown McGee comes to Colwin County, Texas to claim his estranged father's estate, a thriving rice farm, dilapidated mansion and cemetery. Smitten by tenant Carrie Giddings, Crown vows to have Carrie just as he has claimed his father's land. Crown offers complicity in a murder in exchange for Carrie, but the Giddings flee Colwin County, leaving Carrie's daft sister Jewel in Carrie's place. On the road to love and redemption, Crown faces hard lessons, a daughter Sela, born with his deformity and a wayward brother Jackson bent on claiming the estate.

Readers tell me they have a love/hate relationship with Crown McGee that parallels Crown's discovery of his own self-worth. When Crown learns to love himself, he can extend that love to others. That is a universal lesson.

Are you a believer in outlines, or do you write spontaneously?

I have done both. Characters have a backstory - a history that motivates them to act the way they do. I find it helps me to develop a profile for my major characters and a timeline for key events, including events that occurred before the story begins.There are times however when a story just takes off without an itinerary. A great story can develop either way.

What do you think it is about your book that will keep readers turning the pages?

Readers love these characters. Short chapters and good writing propel the story and the reader to a climatic end.

Are you a believer in outlines, or do you write spontaneously?
I don't really write in outlines. When I see something on television, or outside, a friend or stranger, or a movie, I immediately write it down in my black and white composition book, and add my spend to it. I can write in the middle of the night, the morning, the afternoon, on the train, in the bathroom, etc.
What do you think it is about your book that will keep readers turning the pages?
I hope the short stories will keep you turning because you don't know what's coming next. You can read "Business Love" in one chapter, and then "Fatal Mistake" in another chapter. My stories don't have the same theme, but they do promote romance, which I am a believer of. I know everyone has a mate for them. I think the titles will also add a twist because the story surprises you in a lot of ways.

What do you want readers to take away from this book?
I want readers to take away from my book that all things are possible, that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, that tomorrow comes in the morning and that change begins with self. When I was in the abusive relationship, I never felt ready to leave because their were obstacles at every turn and I contested the impediments initially with an assortment of reasons explaining why I couldn’t walk out…why I did not feel strong enough to leave…why I didn’t think I could make it on my own when I was already alone…alone with company. Take with you that sometimes no amount of planning and contemplation can prepare you to make a change and that you may never be ready until you do it.
Do you believe in writing outlines?
I believe in outlines and use them depending on how well structured and organized the topic upon which I am writing needs to be. In my first novel, “You’ll Never Be Ready Until You Do It”, I used a form of outlining because I compiled over 15 years worth of journals as the foundation and basis for my story. It was a great help. At the beginning of the book, I just free lanced or wrote spontaneously the information but because the story was inspired by actual events it was important for me to be organized to a certain degree for the sake of clarity. I believe that when a story line is experienced based it also needs to give off an air of naturalness to draw in the reader so that they are able to evoke emotions and appeal to the reading audience’s intellect.
What will keep the readers turning the pages?
I believe that what will keep readers turning the pages of this book is being able to relate to someone who is going through something that affects each of us on some level in our daily lives. When people read this book they are probably gaining a better understanding of why it takes so many women such a long time to break the chains of abuse and move towards a better life. I think the strength and charisma that the main character displays keeps the reader interested in what she will do next, and how she will handle each turning point in her life. The book is a nail biter, a crier, a laugher, and a beacon of hope for anyone who feels to weary to carry on.

I always wanted to write, but for many years I had too many other activities going on; a good excuse to put off writing. Once I really got started, I found I loved it.

1. What do you want readers to take away from your book?

I hope the reader will not only learn something or gain a new perspective, as well as come away with a sense of satisfaction. I hate when a book (or movie) leaves things up in the air. When I want “real life”, I read the newspapers.

2. Are you a believer in outlines, or do you write spontaneously?

Actually, I do sort of use an outline, but it’s in my head. I always have a pretty clear idea of the ending, so I know my destination. But instead of taking the freeway, I take the “scenic route”.I learn new things about the characters and the story as I go.

3. What do you think it is about your book that will keep readers turning the pages?

I try offer interesting characters and to keep things moving, with a periodic brisk change of scene and atmosphere, like stopping and taking a fresh breath. When you watch a movie, you instinctively know when the director allows a scene to drag on too long. A good director knows when to yell, “Cut!” Same with a book.

Madison Taylor is the definition of hard work. 32, the eldest of three girls, raised in Bronx, NY, I was faced with many challenges. Strived to finish school and become a lawyer, I managed to obtain a Bachelors in Criminal Justice and currently in Graduate school to obtain my MPA at John Jay College.

I surmised myself as having a dramatic imagination and writing became my passion hobby. I’ve had this story in my head so long, it seemed like I had lived it. I want readers to read Scattered Lies and take in the spirit of each character. Many fiction books are written and the story focuses on one character. My book brings you four stories of different lives that deceit brings together through a world wind of unpredictable events. I want readers to see that sometimes we will do anything for self preservation and when it comes to personal happiness nothing is sacred.
How do you write?
I am a spontaneous writer. I feel outlines limit my thought process. When I free write it gives me just that, freedom to write.
Why will readers keep turning pages?
The key page turner of Scattered Lies is the characters are relatable. A reader, man or women will see something in the book that will remind them of “that” time. Scattered Lies is also a dramatic novel that takes us on a unique journey of a different ghetto minus the clichés’ of the more circulated street tales of sex, money and murder.

What do you want readers to take away from your book?
As an author I always want my readers to walk away with my message. As I wrote each chapter, each sentence and word I consciously thought about what I wanted the reader to think and feel. For example, in my current book If You Like Chocolate Eat Chocolate, the message I’m conveying is that we all like what we like. Be it the food we eat, the place we vacation to or the relationship choices we make, we all like what we like. And who has the right to say to another person they are making the wrong choice in their personal relationships.
The other message in my book is to see yourself and your life choices for what they actually are. If you are in an unhealthy relationship according to your morals and standards, and not based on the standards of others, then you see your relationship for what it’s worth; and not what you imagine it to be. You can’t change what you don’t acknowledge.

Are you a believer in outlines, or do you write spontaneously?
I am a big believer in outlines - I always use an outline whenever I write. In fact, I’ll do several rewrites on the outline first. I start with a working outline of all the chapters. Then for each chapter I write a summary, again I’ll do several rewrites, then lastly I get into the meat and potatoes of the story I want to tell in each chapters. Once I feel I have flush out all my thoughts and have a written manuscript – then I start over again and go through each chapter and do more rewrites. After that I hand it over to an editor who corrects misspelled words and grammar… Then finally off to the publisher… Yay.

What do you think it is about your book that will keep readers turning the pages?
One of the many ways I can hook my readers to want to turn the pages is to fill my book with truths and sincerity. I don’t betray my reader s with filler non – sense words and sentences. In other words I respect my readers intelligent, therefore I won’t cheat them. Another way to capture the reader is to lead each chapter with something enticing, by posing questions and/ or scenario that craves them to want to read more.

What I want readers to take away from my book:I want my readers to realize that greed and the quest for money and success can often put a person in the position of losing those precious things in life that money can't buy. Things like love, trust, and respect.And that a person should never sacrifice their beliefs, morals, or integrity for money.
How I feel about outlines:I believe that the only purpose that an outline serves in creative writing is to create serious writers block. Writing comes from your heart and your soul and as such should run freely from your thoughts to paper. Taking time to organize in an outline stunts and hinders creative thought. I write freely without concern for punctuation and spelling. That comes later in the editing process. However it's important to edit very carefully. The worst thing in the world is a poorly edited book loaded with typing errors and misspellings.
Why I feel my book is a page turner:I feel that my book grabs readers quickly and holds it because it is not the typical romance novel. It is also very suspenseful and at times funny. It is also the type of book that all genders can read. I think a lot of readers see either themselves or someone they know in my book which makes it even more interesting.

I’ll have a general outline, and I find that I stray from it in the middle of the book, but by the conclusion I am back to using the outline. During the rewrite, I find that my stories usually expand by about 15%.

The believability of the characters and the issues the book raises. I wrote it as a provocative piece, that asks, in short What would YOU do? There is also a mix of drama, romance and the study of group dynamics. Most people who’ve read the book wrote that they felt as if they were right there with the human survivors.

Are you a believer in outlines, or do you write spontaneously?
A little of both, actually. Because I write in a straight line (chapter one, chapter two, then chapter three, etc.) I generally begin with a basic outline. After I know how the chapters will flow and how my story begins and ends, I begin to fill in the blanks. This usually gets me to thinking, and I begin to spontaneouly add dialogue and action. By the time I finish, the outline can be over a hundred pages, but it makes the writing flow for me.
What do you think it is about your book that will keep readers turning the pages?
Good question. With DREAM RUNNER, it is the challenge of following a dream, but with DREAM KEEPER, it is the challenge of risking all to keep a dream alive. I have to say that even if I had not written both of these books, I would still love them. Having actual historical characters in the book also adds an interesting slant. The main fictional character is at the forefront of events and there is humour as well as tense moments and dramatic scenes.Again, the fact that most writing deals with the war itself, means that the book can offer a glimpse into what happened to start the civil war and what was it like as the country lurched closer to the precipice.

Are you a believer in outlines, or do you write spontaneously?
My plots are complex, often involving multiple characters and the need to weave 3-4 subplots together. The only way to ensure I’ve tied the clues and subplots together is to have a road map. Rather than an outline though, I prefer to write a synopsis. Initially I include everything I think will happen in the story adding as much detail as I possibly can. However, writing the synopsis is an entirely flexible process because I often discover the most interesting twist mid way through the manuscript that I hadn’t thought of ahead of time. As the story evolves, I update the synopsis. When I’m done with the novel, I’m also done with the synopsis.

What do you think it is about your book that will keep readers turning the pages?
The character of Sam Harper has a wonderful following among readers. One reviewer from Midwest Book Reviews described Harper as: “… a well-realized, no-nonsense cop, a streetwise guy who refuses to give up despite the odds. When the going gets rough, everyone else has given up, an easy option looms, and the race becomes overwhelming, Harper is just getting started. He is the original it ain't over guy.” But as tough as Harper is on the criminal(s), readers appreciate his compassion and soft side for his friends/co-workers and even the victims. Several have expressed their love of his relationship with his father who is a retired city detective. Harper often seeks his father’s advice. Readers have described my novels as fast-paced page turners. I think the reason for it is plotting, the obstacles Harper finds himself in, and the several cliffhangers that are written into the chapters. That’s what will keep them glued to their comfy chair turning those pages.

I have an idea of where, what, and who, then I just write it. I'm not against outlines, but I've not used one. You find what works for you and you go with it.

What do you think it is about your book that will keep readers turning the pages?
Man. My book is so universal. There's drama, comedy, sex, romance, love, compassion. It is such a compelling whole and complete story. The chapters I get the most feedback on are the ones that exhibit the domestic violence. They are very real and I'd close my eyes to remember those times, then wrote them as if I were still there. My thoughts, struggle, and personal pain are all there, so the reader is there feeling it with me. Those were difficult chapters for me to write, but I knew it was necessary. One of my readers told me, “Sophia, I felt like you took me by the hand and I was walking with you. I could see everything so clearly.” I just loved when she told me that, because that's the whole premise of a good book. Also in contrast there are some very comedic characters who do some way out there funny stuff and people love those too.

I'm not a fan of outlines when writing fiction. I like to write spontaneously and then go back and see what fits and what doesn't. Before I sit down to write, most times I already have a general idea of what I want to write about or what the outcome is going to be. If I already know the outcome, then I like to work backwards to see how the characters get there. That is so fun to me.

RL Meets Venita Louise- author of a humorous novel set in the mid-sixties called, Mixed Nuts, and a mystery set in the mid-forties called, Dead on the Money.

My website says, Where Mystery and Comedy reside. Soon, it will say, Where Mystery, Comedy and Music reside. Jumping from short stories to novels to writing songs is the only exercise I get. Writing eases the pressure from my mind, music heals my soul and humor keeps me sane. I am a big fan of contests. I submitted a novella to, Vintage Romance Publishing. I didn’t win, but instead, was offered a contract to publish, Initials For Murder, the prequel to Dead on the Money, now offered at The Author’s Lounge. I also perform in the classic rock band, Meridian.

1.What do you want readers to take away from your book?
We often hear people speak of, the good old days, and of course, every time period has been plagued by its own troubles. Nevertheless, more times than not, it’s the funny things, the fads, the slang, the dances, types of furniture and cars that are most remembered. I try to incorporate these things in my novels with as much accuracy as possible. For the reader who has lived through these eras, I would hope to create nostalgia, an affectionate defibrillation of the mind, jarring it back to times gone by. For the younger reader, I would hope to create a bit of appreciation for the conveniences that we have today and perhaps a sense of curiosity about what it was like to suffer without computers, text messaging and push-button technology.

2. Are you a believer in outlines, or do you write spontaneously?
I think I’m more of a, connect-the-dots writer. I keep notebooks all over my house in case an idea springs to mind. I take notes when I hear an interesting conversation in a restaurant or standing in line for the movies. People are a lot funnier when they are being serious and you can capture some truly worthy dialog just by listening.

When a story comes to mind the first thing I think of is how I want it to end. With that in mind, I begin to create my characters and believe it or not, they seem to drive the story to the intended finish.

3. What do you think it is about your book that will keep readers turning the pages?
I hope that it is the humor in Mixed Nuts that will keep the reader going. Most of the characters in that story are taken from my own family but the names have been changed to protect the guilty. As far as Dead on the Money, it is inspired by my passion for film noir and Mickey Spillane novels. Anyone who enjoys salted peanuts and dingy bars might enjoy this one.

With Savor the Sweetness, I wanted the readers to understand that the grass is not always greener on the other side. That material things do not equate to happiness, and the people and things we sometimes take for granted can all be taken away in a heartbeat.

Are you a believer in outlines, or do you write spontaneously?
No I am not a believer in outlines! Mainly, because I think the characters often lead you in directions you never thought imaginable. If you limit yourself to the confines of an outline, you can possibly miss out on developing the characters fully. One of the things I am old-fashioned about though, is that I write most things out longhand with a regular pencil and pad of paper before sitting down at the computer. It works for me, because when I finally do sit down in front of the computer, I am already at the revision stage! What do you think it is about your book that will keep readers turning the pages?

Writing, for me, is the most sacred art form. So, every word I write comes from the heart and is meant to display a certain meaning and provoke the reader into some type of action. When I sit down to write, I ask myself, what would make me, as a reader, want to turn this page? If I can't answer that question, then I know something's wrong. My pace is purposely fast, and I believe strongly in "show don't tell," so with every page, the reader feels like they are there with the characters - they can touch the same things they are touching, feel what they are feeling, and even smell what they smell. I'm not a professional writer and this is my first book. "Mitten" was my cat of a lifetime, a stray that found his way to me and stayed ... for nearly 20 years. Our adventures included extracting Mittie twice from major appliances, taking him to a sales meeting when I could find no one to care for him (what an adventure that was), and generally a life of fun and chaos. Yet "Citizen Mitten" for all its fun, has its sadness, as it chronicles the death of several dogs and cats, and how we owe our pets a loving death with dignity. We firmly believe that when you bring that puppy or kitty home, along comes a very serious responsibility. You have that pet for its lifetime, and you provide it with a loving death. One chapter deals with the brutal realities of cancer in dogs. If you aren't up to this responsibility, then you have no business having a pet.

Born in New Prague, Minnesota, Gordon W. Fredrickson was raised on a 120-acre dairy farm in hilly, rocky eastern Scott County, and like all the local farm children, he began farm work as a young child. Gordon served in the U. S. Army for three years, earned a Master of Education Degree at the University of Minnesota, and taught high school English for 16 years. During the first five years of teaching, he and his wife Nancy farmed 160 acres in western Minnesota where they raised cattle, hogs and grain. All his books are based on actual events.

1. What do you want readers to take away from your books?
I want readers to have fun reading my books. My priority is to provide realistic entertainment for children and adults. Since the books are about events on a farm in 1950, I am hoping children come away with some knowledge and accurate impressions about the animals, the farming practices, and the lives of children of that era. I am hoping adults will experience a sense of nostalgia about times past and a desire to tell their stories to others. Also, I am hoping the stories provide intergenerational moments when kids are inspired to ask their parents or grandparents questions about their childhood on the farm.

2. Are you a believer in outlines, or do you write spontaneously?
I do most of my spontaneous writing to help me form ideas that end up on scraps of paper stored in a container labeled with a story idea. As I move forward with the idea, I create a file on my PC, but even as I am writing “spontaneously” my mind is organizing it into a story. If I do not have some kind of organized approach in mind, I cannot proceed. I do my best writing when I have a general outline in my head and do not have to think consciously about organization and can just write the scene as the characters would live it. However, if the script is in verse that has meter and rhyme, I will have to reorganize. If the manuscript is prose, reorganization may or may not be necessary, depending on how clearly I had it mapped out in my head. Only after I do a fair amount of spontaneous writing and thinking about the work, can I come up with an informal outline that will actually reflect the manuscript, but I never begin with an outline.

3. What do you think it is about your books that will keep readers turning pages?
For little kids, it’s the animals that will keep them interested, but as children grow older, my stories take on more meaning because they show realistic kids experiencing believable adventures in realistic surroundings. The colorful illustrations display the action of animals and people in accurate detail, and the relationships between the family members reveal a bond that children and their parents will find moving.
For adults, the accurate details about farm life and activities reveal the way things were then. Adults like to check if the author “got it right.” If adults feel a story is “true” to the times, they will read it again and again.

Bio: I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. I was voted most likely to succeed while in the 9th grade when I attended Audubon Jr. High school. By the time I reached the 12th grade at Dorsey High, my life took a turn in the direction of obtaining a degree in street knowledge instead of keeping my once 3.6 grade point average up and attending college. I dropped out of school to pursue the American teenager's dream of owning a car. I started with a $50 dollar double-up pack and from there built my little empire. Fatherhood soon followed the start of my illegal career and so I took on the single parent role while grinding it out in the streets. It was only when all had been lost and after serving three years in prison that I realized that my 11th grade English teacher was right suggesting to me back then that I should become a writer. After 13 years of hustling, I have now taken my life experiences and put them into the novel, “Heavy in the game” and is presently working on the sequel, “The game don’t wait.”

I want readers to feel as though they have just walked away from watching a movie and have just finished a journey that they have learned from and can pass along to others. I want the youth that read my book to see first hand through my main character, the domino effect that he has on others around him and how you do not realize what you are actually doing to them while doing what you do in the streets.

I am a spontaneously writer. I may get up in the middle of the night and write a scene that came to me in my sleep.

I think that the reality of the characters and the situations that they are faced with, readers are not only captivated by, but they can either relate to or feel they actually know one or more characters in the story. Are you a believer in outlines, or do you write spontaneously?

I believe in both writing with outlines and spontaneously. Using the outlines allow you to have a template of how you want the book to go, but I am not a traditional writer that starts from beginning to the end. I jump around between the subjects, and may add an additional chapter or two.

What do you think it is about your book that will keep readers turning the pages?

The drama and the descriptiveness of the story. I tried to explain the story to the reader so much in detail, that if you close your eyes, you can actually visualize everything that is taking place.

1. What do you want readers to take away from your book?

I want readers to remember that true friendship still exist between women. A lot of women are leery about forming true friendships with other women, this saddens me because there have been times in my life when I needed my girls more than I needed my mother, my husband. It saddens me to think that today that type of friendship is an exception to the rules instead of the rule with women. We, by nature are nurturers; we give and give and give and sometimes we need that nurturing returned to us and that's what true girlfriends do for each other.

2. Are you a believer in outlines or do you write spontaneously?

Both. I can run on. Usually, there is a main idea floating around in my head that could become a book; the longer it floats the bigger it becomes for me. Once I'm sure that that idea is large enough to center a book around, I set pen to paper and write down the main ideas; where I want to take the reader and essential things that must happen to move the story on, and last but not least, I write down where I want the reader to end up. I'm not tied to a outline per say because at any given time I can write a single sentence that can take the entire story in a difference direction, and I'm okay with following where the words lead. That, in my opinion keeps a book fluid and makes it a good read. But I need a outline to keep my characters at least going somewhere near the direction I originally intended them to go in.

3. What will keep readers turning the pages?

I've tried to create everyday characters; my characters are not rich, they don't run or own corporations, they are not traffic stopping beauties, their love is not all encompassing nor does it solve every problem in the world. My character’s, are you and me, everyday women facing everyday problems. Some readers might not want to read about the very problems that they're facing in their leisure time, but reading about women that are going through the same things that you might be facing, is empowering, it's lets you know that you are not alone and there is strength in numbers. I want my readers to feel empowered when they finish reading Postal Blues. It's interesting to see how so-and-so will handle those same problems that you had and it's fun to elaborate on how you solved it, and if her way, or your way was better. It puts the characters in your life and you in theirs and that’s what keeps the pages turning. That’s, what will make you wake up the next morning wondering what Bailey is doing today or how Lisa and her son are doing after you've finished the book.

Besides it being entertaining, I want readers to know that holding on to grudges is unhealthy. I show how revenge can wreck havoc on one's life in His Invisible Wife. I also tap into how greed can cause you to do things you wouldn't normally do.

Are you a believer in outlines, or do you write spontaneously?

I do a little bit of both. I usually do a character chart on all my main characters. I think through my story. I make sure whatever I write supports my theme and ending. If I'm out somewhere and ideas hit me, I will write out chapter titles and then use that when I'm sitting back in front of my computer. Even if I write a synopsis for a story, it is subject to change when I write.

What do you think it is about your book that will keep readers turning the pages?

The main characters Jake and Brianna are three dimensional. They are not perfect. They do things that will have readers laughing, cheering and may even get them a little upset at some of the decisions the characters make. It's drama packed and will hold the reader's attention.

My name is Teryl Cartwright and my book is called A Sensible Match which is a Regency romance about a matchmaking parents, less than grateful kids and the ultimate twist when the couple decides their parents might be right at the very moment the match is forbidden. What makes this book special is that I actually know how it feels to have someone in your family play matchmaker and I ended up marrying the man “chosen” for me!

Some bio info about me—I have a teaching degree, but write more than teach, I was born in Texas but live in PA, (so I’m not sure if that makes me a Yankee Rebel or vice versa) and I love all kinds of fiction so I have included a slightly “western genre” touch to my English novel.

What do you want readers to take away from your book?

I would hope readers take away laughter and the feeling of wonder and joy in a good romance. I want readers to love my characters as much as I do and have my novel adventures bring both a smile to the soul and hope to the heart. After all, I believe that there is some comedy in falling in love. Falling in love HAS to be funny—the act of falling is far from graceful or deliberate. Falling makes me think of banana peels and America’s Funniest Home Videos and the weird thing that happens to your sanity when you discover that special someone. Falling in love is sharing awkward moments, silly misunderstandings and unexplainable, unexpected behavior. How else do you explain some of the crazy things that happen in romance which you can only shake your head about later? Even as we laugh at the painful parts, we all still recognize and root for “happily ever after”. Falling in love to me is a funny, exhilarating journey into what we choose to have faith in as the best part of life and ourselves.

Are you a believer in outlines, or do you write spontaneously?

I believe in general outlines with some flexibility for those moments in which the characters hijack the story to make it their own. I don’t think it would be much fun to map out an entire book before writing it, but I do need a little direction of where the story is going. I am a firm believer in great endings to books (more than beginnings) so often I’ll know how a book ends and then have the wonderfully unpredictable journey of writing it to see how to get there.

What do you think it is about your book that will keep readers turning the pages?

I really believe that a combination of factors will keep readers turning the pages, though a story is only as good as the meaning behind the words. I took a simple idea, “Can you choose whom to love?” and went from there. Abby is a part time Good Samaritan, caring for the people she chooses until her suitor Edwin challenges her to do more. Page turning then occurs with their witty, cozy romance matched with an exciting attempt on one of the character’s lives to keep the couple apart and finally, the delicious ironic twist that occurs when Abby tries to lose a guy in ten days and actually “gets” him instead.

There's a lot you can do to edit your own book. Your objective is to make the material that's already there, more readable, more appealing, more understandable and more inviting to the reader. That's it. That's the big goal that every editor chases when they sit before a manuscript.

Omit Needless Words. In short, if there's a word in the sentence that can be removed without damaging the thought, it should be removed. That alone can dramatically improve your writing.

Most people think of editing right on the hard copy, paper and ink, with pen in hand. Okay, feel free to do that. Personally, I like to use the computer screen. Remember, if you make the changes on the screen, they're made. No one has to re-enter the material you've just edited.

Search the document for the word 'that.' Almost 75% of the time this word can be eliminated without changing the thought of the sentence. Next comes the word 'then.' Get rid of it if you can.

Search for the two letters 'ly' and you'll find most of the adverbs in your work. An adverb modifies a verb. He didn't just run, he ran quickly. Remove the adverbs. Remove them and use a better verb. Get rid of the adverbs. Don't forget to do a search for 'ly.' as well. Adverbs can turn up at the end of a sentence, frequently.

Try and eliminate; usually, nearly, barely. Also, be wary of 'often' and 'seems.' If words, phrases or entire sentences can be removed without affecting the work, then remove them. Do a quick word count before you begin. Your goal is to have 10 percent fewer words than when you started... and watch your writing get better and better.

Variety in Reading...

Fiction books actually form a wide genre as various sub genres. One can find romantic fiction novels which depict love story of imaginative people. Then there are science fiction novels which depict the combats of the evil and the good in an extravagant manner. These books also have mesmerizing characters to capture the imaginations of the readers.

However, the fiction books at times also deal with real life incidents. But, those real life situations are described in an awe inspiring manner as they contain certain fantasy elements and astounding plots too. However, certain books of this genre also have good social messages which can be appropriately used to teach the right values of life to the readers.

Many times we can get stuck in a rut of reading the same old thing. Starting this month I will be interviewing on this blog a wide array of authors with different backgrounds. I hope you will take the time to get to know someone new. Maybe even a new genre….

How do you select a book?

When browsing through the stacks of novels at the local bookstore, how does a customer choose a new author? Marketing research firms spend thousands of dollars trying to determine consumer behavior and ways to manipulate that behavior.

Have you ever watched customers meandering through the aisles, picking up one book, perusing the cover, then selecting another? Why do they select any one particular book?

Word of mouth, or recommended by a friend was the factor most often mentioned as the number one factor. Some books are simply so memorable that readers become anxious to tell their friends about them. Publishers spend millions of dollars on advertising, book tours, etc., but one of the most powerful forces driving a book’s success is basic grass roots, one-on-one word of mouth.

The cover either entices or detracts. Don’t judge a book by its cover doesn’t ring true with most readers.

The infamous back cover blurb is the key deciding factor for many readers. Perusing a sample chapter either clinched the sale or resulted in the reader deciding not to buy.

Reviews increase the visibility of an author and their books, but it isn’t the deciding factor of whether to read that particular book.

Long Distance Romance

Long distance dating can be draining both emotionally and financially. Time spent talking to a partner who is hundreds of miles away requires tons of patience. The fact that you are in a loving relationship but your partner is not there when you need them most can be depressing. Sometimes they seem so near yet so far.

On the flipside though, sometimes it is healthy for the relationship. A relationship that is facing or experiencing a rough stretch can find its cure in distance. Long distance relationships make people to really appreciate the fact that they cannot do without each other. Partners can really focus and see how much value their spouses mean to their lives. The partners get ample time to meditate and evaluate themselves on a personal level and what they want out of the relationship. Distance actually can bring a conflicting couple closer. It also can prove disastrous.

For most people the saying is true, seeing is believing and once out of sight you are also not in the mind. The soft spot that you had for that person adopts some sort of indifference. A coldness can set in. A couple that is always together has a lot of fire going between them unlike partners with a whole ocean standing between them. Unless such a couple is totally committed, the rigors of long distance relationship can eat away at their once sound foundation.

Why can't baseball players get any love?

I’m sure you’ve heard of Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. But have you ever heard of Curtis Granderson or Ryan Howard? Probably not. These young stars are doing their thing on the baseball diamond. That’s right, I said baseball.

You know …wooden bat, little white ball, homeruns. For a while now I’ve wondered why baseball players don’t seem to be so popular. Let me ask you; Do you even watch baseball?

If not, why not?

In my debut novel, The Last Ms. Understanding, the lead male character is a former baseball star.

Myself, I grew up watching the game and I still do. But, when Michael Jordan stepped onto the scene in the mid 1980’s and became a global icon it seemed like every kid laced up his sneakers and threw down their baseball gloves.

Why do you think baseball has lost its popularity? What will it take for baseball players to get some love?

Oh, by the way…In 2009 Ryan Howard, a baseball player on the Philadelphia Phillies will make $15,000,000 compared to LeBron James $14,400,000. Go on, admit it. Baseball’s starting to look better already….

The C word...Commitment

Every man and woman's commitment expectations are different, and that's perfectly fine. A committed relationship is not something that just happens because you've been with the same person for a certain period of time, so things "naturally" progress into a committed relationship. We all know that's not what happens.

What happens alot is that one partner finds him or herself feeling committed but doesn't sense the same level of commitment from the other person.

Getting someone who doesn't seem ready to commit or resists commitment to commit is probably one of the most difficult things to do. Just as you can't insist that someone love you or love you back, you can't insist that someone commits to you.

What do you do if you are ready for a commitment and the other person doesn't seem quite there yet?

Do you just wait for him or her to commit to you -- and to the relationship?

It's important to remember that while resistance to commitment can sometimes seem like your world has come to a standstill, resistance to commitment can also be healthy. It can act like brakes slowing it down and allowing you to see things more clearly (is this person right for you) and also manage the process at the pace that is comfortable to you emotionally and financially.

With that said, it's not a very good idea not to wait too long before bringing up commitment.

Things might just get too comfortable to change...

Men and women are always curious about how to engage each other in conversations about money. What questions are OK to ask? When do you start asking direct questions about money? Everybody wants to be sure they are financially compatible before they commit to a long-term partnership, but very few are comfortable talking about the issues. Being able to accurately assess financial compatibility is an essential aspect of the dating process and can also be a helpful skill in existing relationships as well. Money issues come up sooner or later so you might as well be up front from the start. Your money personalities do not have to be the same as the people you are dating or even the same as your ideal partner’s.

The critical question is how do the differences affect you? Can you live with the consequences that may result from the differences? Some differences can be easily accommodated. Some differences can cause uneasiness in your relationship resulting in resentments that outlive the love. Is it wise to discuss money matters while dating? If so, when is a good time?

Almost all men hate to admit that a successful woman intimidates them. A lot of men also find it extremely hard to even approach successful or wealthy women due to the fear of rejection. Not only is it about the wealth, but also the level of education. We live in an age of technology and competition, where more and more women are achieving more success than males. Not only can this hurt a man’s ego but it can also cause social insults.

Many men in this situation have found it difficult to mingle with colleagues and friends of their girlfriends, dates, or spouse. If he does not have the same status the he may fear being treated differently among her higher class social groups. This may cause a multitude of problems. Many times, if success levels are not equal, the relationship suffers in the long run, no matter the extent of the initial connection.

In my novel the scene largely revolves around a popular jazz nightspot (Charlie's Lounge) where people go to have a good time. It is there that the main characters Rita Clark and Lee Johnson meet for the first time. Smooth jazz is in the background as they conversate, and I imagine that they and you the reader would enjoy these sounds. I know that I do. The instant Lee lifted his head from staring into his drink, he saw her. His mind shifted expeditiously as he sat up trying to keep a cool look glued to his face. Keith and Uncle Charlie both already needed to wipe the drool from the corners of their dry chapped lips. Those two talked a good game but usually settled for local regulars who were odd shaped and low on intelligence.

He desired to meet someone with substance, a lady with classy style. Someone like this mystery woman who just walked in was exactly what he envisioned for himself. You could tell by the way she glided across the floor that she wasn’t from around there. He kept thinking to himself that she had to be lost. Somehow she just didn’t fit in with the crowd filled with locals who grew up together but never found the courage to leave. He knew if he didn’t act fast, that some ridiculous looking clown, clad with polyester pants and knock off cologne would approach her, equipped with an act of buffoonery within minutes.

Without speaking, he instinctively removed himself from the bar progressing towards the stranger whose enchanted face danced beneath dim light. Her body language exuberated confidence. Her face was to be desired. Everything about her from the way her wavy hair complimented her face, down to her model like shape was in perfect place. Even her feet were gorgeous as he watched her take a seat. She sat alone at a table near a window, looking slightly bored.

“Where’s he going? Where’s he going?” Keith asked as he and Uncle Charlie slap boxed playfully, bouncing up and down like children wanting to be picked up.

Lee knew exactly where he was going and he wasn’t about to blow it by hanging around with his usual crowd. He dispersed from their vicinity, eager to approach her. Out of the corner of her eye, the lady noticed the well built former athlete moving in her direction. As a waitress passed by shouldering flutes of Moet & Chandon White Star champagne Lee grabbed two glasses and kept moving like you see in the movies.

Perhaps being Charlie’s nephew had its perks to go along with years of poor advice? Lee’s father died young and Charlie was his mother’s brother who to his credit stepped in to fill the void.

He stepped within a few feet when she glanced his way her eyes looking up at him, leaving him momentarily paralyzed. Her long eye lashes hovered over her light brown Asian inspired eyes.

Lee extended his hand. “Oh I’m sorry, can I sit down, I mean are you…” He stumbled over his words like an old drunk at midnight. Feeling sorry for his audible error, an invitation was extended to sit down by way of a hand gesture. She moved so gracefully, almost like she was below the oceans surface. Her jewelry shined radiantly, a tasteful mixture of gems and semi-precious stones adorned her neck, wrist, and fingers.

She shook his hand. “Rita Clark, nice to meet you,” she said. Her voice sounded better than she looked. The smoky sound was laced with proper tone and pronunciation.

“Lee Johnson. The pleasure is all mine,” he said. One thing was for sure, Lee had to step his game up, and it was unequivocally clear by the Burberry perfume that intoxicated his nose she wasn’t like the ladies from around town. He breathed deep to take in the fragrance again. She sipped her champagne slowly.

“I’ve been in town for a few weeks now,” she explained, “I bought one of the new lofts not far from here and commute to the city for work.”

Lee was familiar with the lofts she was referencing. He used to play baseball behind those once abandoned buildings as a youngster. He toured one of them at an open house when they first remodeled the once vacant furniture factory. Reality was he couldn’t afford half of a payment they were asking for the loft.

The brief conversation was moving along exceptionally. She was smiling and laughing at his usual charm while he continued to speak with confidence. Keep your cool he kept telling himself.

“What do you do for work?” Lee asked, doing his best to sound professional.

“I’m a CPA, I just started a job with a firm in the city but I wanted to live out a little. I’m tired of the hustle and bustle of the city. I needed a change,” she continued, “and when the opportunity came to head up Jackson & Fitz Accounting Division, I jumped at it.”

“You run the company?” Lee asked.

She laughed playfully with a sparkle in her eyes. “Oh, you don’t think a woman can handle her business?”

Even her teeth were perfect, along with her laugh. Perfect.

“I’m the first female COO in the company’s eighty-five year history and I’m proud of that,” she said. She took another small sip of champagne. Her glossed lips shined as Lee watched them closely. “Enough about me, what do you do?” she asked.

Lee froze. Panic stricken, he felt his body temperature rise and a little trickle of sweat slowly rolled down the center of his back. “I work at Home Towne Mailers as the first shift supervisor.” Lee looked down; his eyes fluctuated left to right.

“That’s great, have you been there long?” she asked with interest.

“Yea, ten years now,” he said while shrugging his shoulders. The player façade he once had was now removed, and Lee didn’t feel much like conversing. Somehow ex-baseball player and bulk mail supervisor didn’t seem so fascinating matched up with accounting firm COO.

“Stability…I like that in a man,” she said. Rita smiled as she talked. “I’ll tell you what Lee, I have an engagement in the morning and I just wanted to check this place out. A girl at work recommended it to me. Why don’t we exchange numbers and talk sometime.” She reached into her pecan brown leather Coach bag and handed him a business card.

“I’d love to talk again. You know what… I’m all out of business cards here’s my number.” Lee tried to sound cultured as he scribbled seven digits on a soiled wrinkly napkin. Within moments she was gone after politely thanking him for the champagne.

As he walked back towards the bar, he watched her pull out of the parking lot in a brand new silver two door Audi TT 3.2 coupe. Lee lethargically dropped his head, still rubbing the business card she gave him as if he was consoling it. Inside his head he was thinking, maybe this time he was in over his head, and perhaps out of his league. His good looks could always get his foot in the door, but this door wasn’t like any other he’d knocked on.
